Extension Kitchens

Over the past decade we have seen a steady decline in brick extensions across the UK as the vast majority of homeowners are opting for  modern style extensions which are usually built with a mix of rendered block and aluminium framed double glazing. The main reason for this is the popularity of open plan kitchens and dining areas which have now become the norm for millions of homes.

Everyone it seems want a to open up their home to the garden which means loads of aluminium folding doors and floor to ceiling glazed panels. Gone are the brick extensions of yesteryear which let in little light, took ages to build and cost a small fortune.

Example: Imagine paying 30k or so for a brick extension like this! The actual brickwork might be 1st class but the design is appalling...

There are of course some homes where only a brick extension makes sense and there are also a few homeowners that are not  in favour of modern extensions, preferring to stay with tradition.

What you have to consider here is that the homes our parents lived in were for another era and that most of them are not really suitable for the life styles we have today.

Example: Another exceedingly dull extension. They must have the lights on all day because it will be incredibly dark inside...

Take the small kitchen in a 1930’s style house for example which is only a few a few metres wide. Who on earth wants to spend the evening cooking a meal in a tiny kitchen whilst everyone else is in the from room watching the tv?

Those days are gone as homeowners are now prepared to spend their savings modifying their homes to accommodate their lifestyle and who can blame them. Modern homes with open plan living spaces that open up to the garden are far nicer to live in than traditional homes with brick extensions so take my word for it, the modern extension is here to stay.

Example: This particular brick extension looks smart and good quality but it’s far from open plan which is what most people want...

Bricks will still be used for piers and features within an extension rather than to create a whole extension that matches up with the house. Where solid walls are required it makes perfect sense to use block and render like what we have been seeing on the modern extension. It’s cheap, its efficient and it quicker to build so whats not to like.

Example: Another waste of 25k or so. On this poor example of a brick extension they didn’t even bother to open up the back house wall or attempt to integrate the extension...

If you still wish to build a  brick extension then fine, go and do it, but remember that it is far easier to sell a property with a well built modern extension and that any extension that has been designed well to suit a modern lifestyle will add substantial more value to the price of your property than an outdated brick extension.
