End of terrace extensions are a great way to add more living space especially since side gardens are not nearly as important as the back ones and you don’t have to end up sacrificing much needed greenery in exchange for more floor space.

I’ve seen some lovely end of terrace extensions but I’ve also seen a large number of poorly designed ones so once again I can’t stress enough how important it is to get the design right.

Example: A lovely end of terrace extension. Note the use of matching old stock brickwork, sash windows and slate roof...

It’s all very well adding an extension to get more living space but don’t lose focus on the external appearance as a good end of terrace extension will deliver:

All house extensions should deliver in these areas but a high number do not which is quite sad because it doesn’t necessarily cost more to create good looking extensions that work.

Example: A modern 2 storey end of terrace extension in South London. This a great example of how you can transform a home with a small extension...

You also have to consider how a side extension impacts on the layout of a house as integration can be more difficult than a rear extension. In instances where you can add an extension that goes the full depth of the house you have more options as you can create an entry from the front entrance hall as well as through the back kitchen.

Another huge mistake that some homeowners make is that they create 2 rooms or so with an extension but don’t remove any house or internal walls. This means that you end up with more rooms but at the end of the day you haven’t really modernised the property in the process.

Example: A creative touch was needed here to turn this tiny space into a usable end of terrace extension...

Adding an extension give you the opportunity to change the internal layout to create a modern open plan living space which usually incorporates the kitchen, a dining area and some recreational space. By adding an extension you now have the opportunity to create extremely desirable living space that will most certainly changes the way you live and engage with other members of the family.

Example: There is no law that says you can’t go big and use glass to create a stunning glass side extension...

Example: This particular end of terrace is most certainly a conversation topic. Who says you can’t be bold and imaginative when you add a modern extension to a period terrace property...

If you’ve ever lived in a modern well lit spacious home then you will know exactly what I mean. If you don’t then give careful consideration to what it might be like to cook a meal whilst keeping an eye on the kids doing home work, checking your emails and catching up on your favourite soap. This is modern living and is the number one reason why homes that have been extended and opened up are far more popular and sought after.

I spent almost 30 years living in period properties in London and loved every minute of it because I opened them all up to create modern homes that served all of my family really well.

So, if you are considering adding an end of terrace extension then you should do it but make sure you go for the full integration and remove some walls in the process and that way you will have a home that everyone loves, a home that will give you many happy years and a home that is worth substantially more than what it is worth now.
