MANSARDS LOFT CONVERSIONS MAKE THE BEST LOFT CONVERSION

Mansard loft conversions are the best type of loft conversion that money can buy. They also offer up the most space as you are building right up to and including the boundary walls.

The vast majority of loft conversions are dormer as they work out cheaper than a mansard and still deliver a reasonable amount of space.

On terraced properties for example, a mansard loft conversion is achieved by building up both party walls to the ridge height and installing a roof in between. This provides the maximum amount of space for the loft with the added advantage of a large flat ceiling and straight walls for the back half of the conversion.

Planning permission is required for a full mansard loft conversion and you will also need a party wall surveyor as you are building on 2 party walls jointly owner by you and your neighbours. As long as you get along with your neighbours and they don’t object then it shouldn’t be much of a problem. A good point from your neighbours point of view is that should they wish to convert their own loft then half the mansard is there already as the can use your wall to build off of because half of it is theirs.

Do bear in mind that when you add an extra floor you will need to consider fire risk which means further work may be required on other floors in the house. You may also have to provide a fire escape window and external staircase depending on circumstances.

A new bathroom is usually installed to accommodate the additional bedrooms. This can be troublesome because of the services such as hot water, cold water and waste pipe that you need to bring up another floor. In some cases the cold water pressure is so poor that by the time it gets up another floor it is barely a dribble.

When it comes to heating and hot water you have to make a determination on how you want to supply. Your existing heating system may not be able to cope with another bathroom so you need to consider if you are going to upgrade the old system or install a separate independent heating and hot water systems.
