You have to admit, an orangery extension does tend to look better than an average house extension and can really help to enhance a boring or a dull looking property.

However, a traditional orangery doesn’t suit every type of house as they tend to go better with older more traditional styles of period homes. Take a moment or two to look at the orangery photos above and you will soon start to develop an impression of where they belong.

Over the past decade or so we have seen a huge growth in orangery extensions across the UK as well as many thousands of extensions incorporating orangery features. Architects and extension designers are well aware of how popular the orangeries are and whilst they can’t really add a full blown orangery style of extension on many properties they can however use some of the orangery design elements to give an ordinary extension an orangery flavour.

Conservatory designers are also well aware of how good the orangery looks and are now routinely adding orangery features to their conservatories and it works really well.

Orangeries have been around for hundreds of years and I’m delighted to see that we are now seeing a revival as well as many of the orangery style features being used to create extremely beautiful extensions.

Of course you can’t beat a real orangery extension as quality is a key element and for that you have to pay considerably more than the cost of a conservatory or a basic extension.

Oak framed orangeries are also very popular and really do look substantial buildings that will stand test of time. One key feature of a timber framed orangery is that they look better as they get older whereas the painted orangery requires repainting every 5 years or so to keep up its appearance.

In terms of cost an orangery extension is one of the most expensive types of house extensions but you get what you pay for as a well designed and built orangery will give you years of pleasure as well as adding substantial value to your property.
