Adding a porch to your home is a great idea and if designed well can alter the look and feel of any property in a very positive and pleasing manner. Of course you do have to be careful because I have seen loads of badly designed porches which have the opposite effect.

Example: A pretty good example of a porch that integrates nicely with the building. A practical porch offering up the usual security and energy saving elements...

Amongst the many benefits of adding a porch I would state security as the main benefit nowadays, easily out ranking, energy saving, noise suppression and aesthetics.

Homes with secure porches are far less likely to be targeted by burglars simply because they are more trouble than they are worth.

Example: Here we have a porch that links up with an existing bay window. Replacing the bay roof to create one new roof is a great way of integrating the new porch...

If you happen to have a uPVC double glazed porch you have the benefit of high security doors and windows that are a great deterrent to unwanted visitors.

Example: Timber framed, especially oak, porches are very popular with old rural or village type houses...

Porches are also great if you want to keep some distance from visitors until you can establish if they are friend or foe or simply as visitor screening devices where you can see who is calling without been seen yourself.

For elderly or people living alone a porch helps to provide additional peace, comfort and security whether to both inner-city suburb homes as well as rural retreats.

What we are also seeing more of are larger porch extensions that incorporate cloakrooms and storage areas. This can be particularly useful if you really want a downstairs w/c and have nowhere to put one.

Example: Here we have a well designed canopy that add loads more character. Try to visualise the property without the canopy or door frame columns...

The use of partial porches and canopies are also popular. They don’t provide much in the way of additional security but they can offer up features that liven up a dull house front.

In terms of added value a porch will always add value to your property providing it is designed well to suit the property as well as being installed to a high standard.
